The cost of cremation in Florida is tends to be more affordable compared to other parts of the U.S.

  • Full-service cremation funerals (e.g., which include a viewing, visitation, or religious ceremonies, etc.) cost well below the median average of $7,070 for a cremation funeral with a viewing (source) in the south Atlantic U.S. states (defined by the National Funeral Directors Association as DE, FL, GA, MD, NC, SC, WV, VA.)

Understanding cremation pricing in Florida

Florida has one of the largest populations in the U.S., ranking third behind California and Texas. The state also had one of the highest growth rates for cremations from 2015 to 2019, with state cremation rates projected to rise from 67.8 per cent in 2020 to 77.2 per cent in 2030 (source). Because of this, there tends to be more funeral home options and a greater variety of end-of-life arrangements to choose from. This fosters a competitive funeral market, which allows providers to offer affordable service packages with a variety of options.

Compared to burial, cremation is the most affordable end-of-life arrangements in Florida. According to a 2021 study by the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA), the average median cost for a funeral with a viewing and burial in the South Atlantic region is $7,800. By comparison, the NFDA put the average median cost for a viewing and cremation in the South Atlantic region at $7,070.

The lower cost for cremation is due mainly to the reduced requirement for products and services needed for cremation arrangements compared to burial. For example, a funeral with a viewing before a cremation eliminates or minimizes the need for a burial plot, cemetery services, casket purchase, etc. An urn plot is a fraction of the prie of a plot for a casket. Cremation fees can be further reduced by opting for a direct cremation. This involves cremating a deceased person shortly after death, forgoing services like a viewing, wake, embalming, etc. Direct burials can also serve as a more affordable alternative, typically ranging from $1,200 to $5,500+.
