Eirene Cremations is pleased to announce that it has started operations in Nova Scotia, providing a new and affordable approach to cremation services for families and their loved ones in the province.

We offer a modern approach to funeral arrangements that provides dignity, efficiency, and affordability to end-of-life plans by addressing the fundamental needs of the cremation process without the expense of a viewing, wake, or visitation. Cremated remains are returned to the family of the deceased, and they can later arrange a fitting memorial or celebration if they wish.

In 2020, 83.2 percent of funerals in Nova Scotia chose cremation as a final disposition option. Across North America, cremation has become the preferred end-of-life option for families seeking simplicity, affordability, and flexibility in memorializing their loved ones.

Meeting Nova Scotia families where they are

Eirene's website allows families to make simple cremation arrangements without the required visit to a funeral home. Our exceptional team is available 24/7 by phone or email to help you through the arrangement. We can also set up an in-person arrangement, if you wish, at your home or our office, by request.

Planning a traditional funeral is often overwhelming, so we’re focused on efficiency and support by an experienced local team immediately and continuously available to you.

Eirene's Nova Scotia operations are led by our accomplished funeral director Kate Taylor-Young, a native of Cape Breton and resident of Halifax who has worked in the funeral industry for 16 years. She has extensive knowledge and experience handling every aspect of funeral and cremation services, from preplanning and operations to aftercare.

We use locally owned facilities and transfer services in the province that support Atlantic Canadian workers. Like other traditional funeral homes, we partner with industry-recognized companies. Your loved one is given the utmost care here, at home, in Nova Scotia.

"Our team is Atlantic Canadian. The services we use are all independent. They're not part of a big chain. This is community helping community”, says Taylor-Young, adding that when you choose Eirene for final arrangements, “you will be taken care of in the same way that I took care of my Mum when she passed, with care and respect.”

How Eirene Works:

All-inclusive pricing

You can review our all-inclusive cremation package and transparent pricing on our website. The average cremation in Canada costs up to $5,000. Our packages were created to reduce stress on grieving families and provide comfort in knowing your loved one is in good hands. We offer three packages suited to your needs. And the price you see is exactly what you’ll pay - no surprises. You can see our detailed pricing here. Our transparent pricing structure is meant to give you the peace of mind that your loved one is receiving the best care and the assurance that you only pay for the services you need.

If you need financial assistance, we will work with you to access federal and provincial government funding or social assistance programs you may be eligible for.

We have also partnered with Affirm payments to ensure every family has access to affordable death care. Once approved, Affirm allows you to make time payments for your desired services with no hidden fees or late fees. Even if you are not eligible for Affirm’s payment plan, we will work with you to ensure you get the support you need.

Arrange from anywhere

Our cremation arrangement platform allows you to engage with our services online or by phone, no matter your location. We ask you the required questions and ensure that your payment is secure; our team takes care of the rest. This is all done from the comfort of your own home, without multiple trips to a funeral home. Once completed, we engage our local transfer service to bring your loved one into our care to our sheltering facility in Halifax.

Once our funeral director completes the required government paperwork and receives provincial and family authorizations, the cremation is completed. The cremated remains are returned to you personally by our funeral director. You also have the ability to select an urn from our catalogue or online store if you wish. A vast selection of urns is available through our online store at the store.eirene.ca.

Supporting Nova Scotia families when they need it most

It is our honour and privilege to provide an alternative to traditional funeral arrangement services in Nova Scotia, to bring you peace of mind and ensure your loved one is cared for with integrity and simplicity after they pass.

What is Eirene?
Eirene is an online cremation planning service. Eirene was founded to provide Canadians with a simple, compassionate, and modern approach to funeral services. With 73.1% of Canadians opting for cremation each year, Eirene’s goal is to be a trusted partner that simplifies the arrangement process and provides families with peace of mind.

Our cremation arrangement process gives families more time to focus on what really matters immediately after losing a loved one. All the families need to do is contact Eirene— online or over the phone, provide the required details, and then our team of experienced funeral directors will take care of the rest.

Making arrangements with Eirene allows you to:

  • Take the time you need to process the enormity of the loss that has just occurred in whatever way you need.
  • Bring family members home who live away
  • Reduce stress, pressured decisions, and family disagreements
  • Gather informally, on your own terms, remembering your loved one; sharing stories, photos and memories
  • Create the celebration your loved one would want, without pressure— no matter what that might be; a favourite restaurant, gathering at a beach, in a park, on the golf course or ocean
  • Eliminate the need for multiple time-consuming appointments at a funeral home

Where did the name Eirene originate?
The word Eirene means a state of peace, and originates from the greek goddess Eirene who was the goddess of peace and the embodiment of spring. We chose the name Eirene to represent and protect a peaceful passing as the goddess was known. To us, Eirene also symbolizes the role many women play in arranging end-of-life services for their families and the growing diversity in the end-of-life industry.

Where does the cremation take place?
Eirene’s team in Nova Scotia is Atlantic Canadian, and all of the crematoriums and transfer services we work with are local independently owned funeral businesses. This ensures that your loved one is never far from home and that families who make arrangements with Eirene will receive the highest quality care from licensed professionals in their own community.

How will Eirene ensure standards of care?
Transparency is paramount, and we go above and beyond the required government guidelines to ensure the continued identification of your loved one throughout our entire process.

First, we require and reference a recent photograph of the deceased to visually verify their identity. This, along with information provided by you, the family, preserve your trust in us during each and every part of this process, from the time they come into our care to the time they are returned home.

Second, we use an industry-accepted Chain of identification document, which is signed and verified by the funeral director throughout the time they are with us. And third, you have the ability to view your loved one prior to cremation, as well as the option to witness the cremation.

Our preferred partners have been involved in the industry for more than 25 years in multiple provinces. They are in good standing with all regulatory bodies and hold licenses issued by the Nova Scotia Board of Registration of Embalmers and Funeral Directors and Service Nova Scotia.

How can you charge less than the industry standard?
By streamlining the process and working with trusted transportation and crematorium partners in Nova Scotia, we are able to minimize our overhead and pass on those savings to our families.
