Biography

It is with overwhelming sadness that we share news of the unexpected passing of Robert Albert Gates, age 63, on January 10th at his Retallack Street home in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Rob was born on May 21, 1959 in Wildwood, Alberta. Growing up, the family moved around a lot, but no matter where they were, Rob would spend time fishing, exploring the outdoors, collecting bottles, going target shooting and getting into trouble with his older brother Rick. He had a deep love for his siblings Tam, Duane, and Laurie and often looked out for them.

Rob moved from Calgary to Regina in the early 1990s to pursue a Masters degree in Social Studies at the University of Regina. He loved the people of Regina and decided to call it home. He was a thinker, an artist and a good friend to many. Those who knew him will miss his creative and curious mind, his poetic worldview, his love of conversation and his kind and generous spirit. He had a keen understanding of nature–especially of light–how it touched this world and how it didn’t. He cared about social justice and he cared about people. He brought these sensibilities to his career in social work, where he dedicated much of his life to helping vulnerable children and families.

He was predeceased by his parents, Donna and Allan Gates. He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his daughters Eli-Bella Wood (Mother Caura Wood) and Alexandria Gates, his wife Gabriela Gates, his siblings Rick Gates (Shannon), Tammy Gates (Kevin), Laurie Gates, Duane Gates, and their families. Rob's friends, colleagues and family are invited to attend a celebration of life this Wednesday, January 25th at 5pm at The Lobby Kitchen & Bar (2545 S, Broad St), the place Rob loved to gather with friends on Wednesdays. An additional ceremony will be held in spring in Lake Diefenbaker, his favourite fishing spot, where his ashes will be laid to rest (please notify the family if you wish to attend: elibellawood1@gmail.com).

In memory of Rob, feel free to make a donation to Creative Kids. Creative Kids connects children and youth to unique, life-changing artistic and cultural experiences in their community. They provide financial support to Saskatchewan families so all children have an opportunity to participate in creative activities like drama, art, dance, heritage, and music.
