Mississauga families that choose cremation for their loved ones often ask about the process. Here is a step-by-step guide on what to expect.

Cremation planning is a new experience for many people, and it can be challenging to know where to start. At Eirene, we aim to simplify cremation arrangements, making the process easier for grieving families in Mississauga and all Ontario communities we serve with cremation services. To that end, we have provided a guide outlining what to expect when choosing Eirene's cremation services in Mississauga, Ontario.

Arranging cremation in Mississauga

The arrangement process at Eirene is straightforward yet caring and compassionate. One of the features that sets Eirene apart is our online platform. It allows client families to skip in-person visits and make arrangements entirely online through our website, where you will also find extensive end-of-life resources and guidance.

Visitors can also browse the online urn catalog, which offers a wide selection of urns that can be shipped to Mississauga and area addresses (and any address in Canada) for free.

To view Eirene's arrangement packages, click on "services" or "pricing" in the website's top menu. Cremation and aquamation services (also known by the scientific name "alkaline hydrolysis") are available to Mississauga clients. We also offer prepaid arrangement services. All packages are itemized and easy to understand.

Begin the online cremation arrangement process by clicking "Start Arranging" in the top right corner of the webpage. Choose the option that best suits your needs in the pop-up menu, and it will redirect to forms that can be filled independently or with the help of our staff. Arrangements can be made over the phone, via email, or via video conferencing if desired. In-person meetings at Eirene's office in downtown Hamilton are available upon request and by appointment only.

For assistance, contact our team at 647-955-4375 or send an email to support@eirene.ca. Our staff is available 24/7 to help guide clients through the steps needed to complete arrangements.

Once arrangements have been made, we correspond with the crematorium partner in Burlington to coordinate cremation services.

Transferring your loved one in Mississauga

Once Eirene's services have been confirmed, our staff facilitates transportation of the deceased person's body from the place of death in Mississauga to our crematorium partner location in Burlington. Identification or witnessing of cremation, if requested, will also take place at the partner facility.

In Ontario, transferring a deceased person's body in a private vehicle is legal. Families can contact Eirene's team to discuss these arrangements if desired.

Documentation and logistics in Mississauga

Eirene handles all or most of the funeral paperwork and logistics, such as collecting information from the deceased person's family, registering the death, obtaining a burial permit, applying for a death certificate, etc.

Once the documentation is completed and payment is made, our team will correspond with our partner in Burlington to facilitate cremation. Identification or witnessing will also take place at the partner location. Visitation services cannot be held on the premises. Still, families can identify their loved one before cremation and observe the cremation container as it is placed into the cremation chamber (retort). They can also initiate the cremation process. There is more information on the "Witnessing" package here.

If someone dies outside Mississauga, the cremation may be arranged in Burlington, North Bay, Peterborough, or Ottawa. This depends on location and logistics and is decided on a case-by-case basis in consultation with our client families.

Cremation process

The cremation process begins with preparing the deceased person's body. This involves removing items or implants that may be dangerous to crematorium staff (e.g., defibrillators) or that the family does not want destroyed (e.g., jewelry). Other materials, like metal fillings or clothes, remain with the body.

Cremation involves exposing bodies to flames and extreme heat (760 to 980 C / 1400 to 1800 F) in a chamber, which reduces organic matter to bone fragments. Non-combustible materials (e.g., dental fillings) also remain and are removed and recycled after a cooling period.

Bone fragments are reduced to a coarse grey or brown powder known as ashes or cremated remains. Ashes are placed in an urn or simple container, as directed by the family, and returned as below.

Returning your loved ones' ashes

After cremation, our staff picks up the ashes from the crematorium partner and makes an appointment with families for in-person delivery. Cremated remains will never be left on someone's doorstep or in a mailbox. This is the standard in all locations we service.

Our staff will also bring documents needed to handle estate matters (e.g., death certificates) during the in-person delivery of the urn. However, if required sooner, expedited delivery is available through the Express Post mail service. A link to create an account with Eirene's partner, Cadence, will also be provided upon delivery. Cadence assists families with after-death affairs that the executor or next of kin must complete.
