Families planning a cremation in Niagara Falls, Ontario, and Niagara Region communities, can learn what to expect in this end-of-life process in this post.

There are several factors to consider when planning a cremation for a loved one, and it can be challenging to choose the best cremation service provider. However, knowing what services are offered beforehand can help narrow down the options. To that end, we have outlined the steps for choosing cremation services with Eirene in Niagara Falls, Ontario, as well as Niagara Region communities such as St. Catharines, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Thorold, Fort Erie, Lincoln, and Grimsby.

Arranging cremation in Niagara Falls

A unique feature of Eirene's services is our online platform. It allows clients to make cremation arrangements via our website. This offers flexibility and saves time and potential costs associated with in-person visits.

Arrangements can also be made over the phone, via email, or by video conferencing, if desired. In-person meetings are available upon request and by appointment only. These meetings take place at Eirene's office in downtown Hamilton (approximately 50 from Niagara Falls and less from other Niagara Region communities).

Eirene's itemized arrangements packages can be found easily online. Click "services" or "pricing" on the top menu of the web page. Cremation, aquamation (also known by the scientific name "alkaline hydrolysis"), and prepaid arrangement services are offered to Niagara Falls and Niagara Region residents.

The website also provides extensive end-of-life resources and assistance. Check out the blog and help centre for informative articles and advice. Learn more about Eirene and its compassionate staff. And browse our wide selection of urns in the online catalog. Free shipping is available to Niagara Falls and Niagara Region addresses with a $100 minimum order and to any Canadian address.

Begin the online arrangements process by clicking "Start Arranging" in the top right corner of the webpage. Choose the desired services from the pop-up menu and fill out the required forms independently or with help from Eirene's staff. Our team is available 24/7 to guide you through the process.

Contact us at 647-955-4375 or via email at support@eirene.ca for assistance. A licensed funeral director will collect information over the phone and help clients finalize arrangements.

Transferring your loved one in Niagara Falls or the Niagara Region

Once arrangements are finalized, our staff will correspond with our cremation partner in Burlington (approximately 45 minutes from Niagara Falls) to coordinate cremation services. We also dispatch Eirene's transfer service to transport the deceased person's body from the place of death to the crematorium partner facility.

Transferring a deceased person's body in a private vehicle is legal in Ontario. Please get in touch with Eirene's team to discuss this arrangement if it is desired.

Documentation and logistics in Niagara Falls

Eirene's staff handles most of the planning, paperwork, and logistics. However, the a member of the deceased person's family can complete and submit end-of-life documentation if preferred. (Learn more in this article).

Once paperwork has been complete, and payment is received, our staff will contact the crematorium partner in Burlington to facilitate cremation. Identification or witnessing can also be arranged at the partner location on request. However, visitation services cannot be held at the facility.

Instead, families and close friends can identify their loved one before cremation or witness the cremation container being placed in the retort (cremation chamber). They can also opt to initiate the cremation process, if desired. (More information on the "Witnessing" package is here).

If a person dies outside the Niagara Falls, the Niagara Region, or Burlington areas, cremation services may be referred to one of Eirene's crematorium partners in Peterborough, North Bay, or Ottawa. This is handled on a case-by-case basis, depending on location and logistics. We always consult with the deceased person's family as part of that process.

Cremation process

The cremation process begins with preparation of the deceased person's body. Any hazardous implants (e.g., pacemakers) are removed. Jewelry is also returned to the family. Clothes and other non-hazardous materials (e.g. metal fillings) remain on the body.

After preparation, the cremation container (containing the deceased person's body) is placed in the retort and exposed to extreme heat (760 to 980 C / 1400 to 1800 F). This reduces organic matter to bone fragments and non-combustible materials (e.g., artificial joints).

After a cooling period, metals are removed and recycled. Bone fragments are reduced to a coarse grey or brown powder known as cremated remains or ashes. Cremated remains are placed in an urn or container and returned to the family (as discussed below).

Returning your loved ones' ashes

After cremation, our staff makes an appointment with families to ensure in-person delivery of their loved one's ashes. Cremated remains will never be left on someone's doorstep or in a mailbox. This is standard in all Eirene locations.

Required documentation (e.g., death certificate) needed to handle estate matters will also be returned during in-person delivery or sent by mail via Canada Post's Express Post service if needed faster. A link to create an account with Eirene's partner, Cadence, is also be provided. Cadence assists families with after-death affairs.
